Midway through the week

Here is an update for I don’t want to say downgrading my computer but it kind of looks like that. I have been using the Raspberry Pi 400 as a my main computer since Sunday, so far I have;

  • Written invoices with ‘Gimp’ – no problems
  • Recorded, edited and published a podcast – no problems
  • Built a new page for the website using terminal and studio – no problems
  • Edited photos – no problems
  • Surfed the main and deep webs – no problems
  • Played youtube tutorials – slight video lag but audio worked well

Not all is good however the problems are minor;

  • Now that I have upgraded my home screen to look modern, I don’t have an off function other than through the terminal
  • Audio is not a problem at all for podcasts and music, video I suspect will be a problem
  • Upon boot it doesn’t like my USB3 extender to be plugged in
  • Connecting to a new wifi was a problem and I had to add add new wifi to the task bar

Yesterday I took it to work to use and discovered the above wifi problem, in the end it wasn’t the 400, it was the signal from my phone as a hotspot in the building where I work was poor. The 400’s performance was great, I didn’t get anything done though.

Conclusion (so far)

It is looking like a capable computer for everyday use, reminds of a laptop from 4 years ago with it’s 4gb operation. I did buy this Pi with the intention of using it as a regular computer and now I have spent time setting it up, I believe I will continue. However, there are still 4 days left of the experiment.

Mobile set up

I am really pleased with my mobile set up. It is a bit clunky with all the long wires and cables but it works. The last two podcasts were edited, formatted and published with the Tascam and the 400. All done within an hour of recording, from the canal to the hotel room. That was a good choice, feeling pleased with myself.

The Process:

Walk along the canal/ area/ etc and start the recording and talk. Check to see if I am reasonably happy with how it turned out. Then make my way back to the hotel and set up the raspberry pi 400. Plug the SD card into the pi and transfer the audio file from the card to the pi. Eject the card and plug in the Tascam DR-40 to use as the soundcard. Load Reaper as sweep cannot export at MP3 on the free version, edit in reaper using fade in and outs. Export to the desktop, give it a listen. Load wordpress and upload the file to the podcast folder. Create a new post linking the file and writing bumpf. Podcast published.
