The Last Proper Hike of 2024 (with the Pi)

The Almost Last Hike of 2024

I have chosen to end the year with a massive walk and technology dump. I put together a Raspberry Pi 4 with an HQ camera module and walked into central London and recorded footage and took photos. It ended up being a 29 mile walk, that was fun but painful.

An English Santa

I had the pleasure of being Santa Claus for two days, once at Capel manor and the second at Hope for Epilepsy, a charity I am an advisor for.

There was a wide range of responses from the children and adults, I shall share them with you here.

  • Lots of young couples turned up with babies. Clearly showing who the experience was really for.
  • One child screamed I hate you 3 times in a row at me.
  • Five girls asked for unicorns, real unicorns.
  • One boy didn’t want a present.
  • One girl wanted to give half of her presents to a hospital.
  • Three children refused to open their eyes.
  • One boy asked for a fart gun to get revenge on his dad.
  • A christian family told me they thought their son was on Satan’s list. I said don’t worry, he’s a friend of mine.
  • Men need to be asked to be in photos and are surprised they get asked.
  • Not enough people bring their dogs.
  • One woman told me that her and son do not believe in Santa anymore???
  • Three children forgot what they asked for, despite writing it down 5 minutes earlier.
  • One boy forgot his name.

There were a lot more but at present I cannot remember them.

Thanks for reading.

Yuletide 2024

The Yuletide Walk

It’s a beautiful city 2000 years old. I am not going to go into the geographical philosophy of ‘it’s two or three cities, City of London, Greater, Westminster, central etc’. London my home town, for better or worse, I love it. At this time of year, it’s not the sort to visit if you’re in a bad mood. It’s too busy with lots of complaining tourists, on social media, I saw a few posts relating to how unfriendly us Londoners are. This is not true, most of the visitors are tourists, who are trying to get from A to B and enjoy a trip to central London. I got lots of smiles, bumped into a few people and we both apologised, as you do. Not really the cold hearted lonely place you would expect.

The walk was roughly 12 miles in length, I started at Essex road station and headed to Tower bridge, to walk along the Thames. I ended up walking over the bridge to the south side and walked towards the Tate modern before crossing over to St Paul’s and walking along Paul’s walk. My destination was the tree at Trafalgar square and it didn’t disappoint. I tried to make my way to Oxford circus but the queue to get into the station was huge and I have no patience for that sort of thing. I walked back up Oxford street to centre point and then headed to Goodge street station and then home.
